what my computer “sees”: embroidery.jpg
One .jpg image of a digital “drawing” in Excel is made up of 3215 pages of assembly code printed on 10 x 10 in paper. I am interested in this because I am hoping to understand more about relationships between computers and the physical environment. Geographies cultural and physical are involved. The environmental impact of electrified communications is something that many are now trying to make legible to human users who may not be aware of such issues in relation to their day to day use of devices connected to global networks. What can be read and by whom are becoming more and more complex questions.
Disembodiment is an essential attribute of the network communications experience. How this relates both to Plato and to Edison is a question for all of us to consider. Is the virtual exploitation of labor easier to “stomach” than the physical exploitation of labor? Probably, only because it is invisible in different ways. Visibility. What we see. It is, of course, a great irony that electronic communication devices are, metaphorically, built from light, since so much of their purpose is to make things invisible.
